Ground Penetrating Radar Systems has been working with Gallatin Steel at their Ghent, KY facility to assist in identifying the location of underground utilities prior to their excavations. In April 2008, Gallatin called Nate Kollar of GPRS’ office in Dayton, OH to assist with finding utilities running parallel to the plant’s internal rail system.

The facility wanted to install an additional conduit in a electrical bank, but before digging wanted to determine the optimal location to put it and to avoid existing buried utilities. Isaiah used a 400 MHz antenna (made by Geophysical Survey Systems) to locate these utilities prior to the excavation. The facility was able to complete the installation of this conduit without encountering any unknown utilities due to their proactive use of the GPR technology. This Gallatin facility has made it policy to use GPR prior to any excavation or concrete cutting on site, in order to avoid a costly shutdown and to proceed with these type of projects in the safest manner possible.

We commonly use the 400 MHz GPR antenna to locate underground electrical, gas, communications banks, water lines, sewers, and underground storage tanks (UST).
